UNIT 32 - Section a) PURPOSE OF A FILM POSTER - MAIN / TEASER / CHARACTER POSTERS

LO1 a) PURPOSE
TASK: Choose three posters: a MAIN POSTER, TEASER POSTER & CHARACTER POSTER from a recent film that has been used for the marketing campaign.  [http://www.impawards.com]

- The sole purpose of a film poster is to advertise an upcoming film, letting audiences know that a new film is due for release.

- A film poster is part of the early marketing strategy to raise awareness and generate hype for the film.

- A film poster provides a range of information for an upcoming film such as the title of the film, the release date, the stars/actors and actresses who are in the film and the BBFC certification.

- This information both attracts a viewer, through naming the stars who are popular and well known, as well as a ‘catchy’ film title, and at the same time informs them of vital information they may want to know about the film such as the release date and the certification.

- This information will determine the film’s suitability, i.e. whether it’s an appropriate film for a child to see.

- The photos and graphics of the poster can suggest a particular genre and narrative that the film will follow, giving an insight to what the film may be about.

- Above all a film poster helps a movie fan to decide whether the film is something they may be interested in going to the cinema and seeing!

UNIT 32 - Section b) FORMAT OF A FILM POSTER - MAIN / TEASER / CHARACTER

LO1 b) FORMAT

Section b) MAIN POSTER FORMAT:

Main posters that feature later in the marketing campaign will be more explicit, revealing more details about the film's plot.

Conventionally, a main poster will include a main image from the film possibly with the key characters. Release date, tag line, star names and a text box containing main cast and crew will feature.

Section b) TEASER POSTER FORMAT:

A teaser poster is an early promotional film poster, containing a basic image or design without revealing too much information such as the plot, theme, and characters.

The purpose is to incite awareness and generate hype for the film. A tagline may be included. There are some instances when teaser posters are issued long in advance before the film goes into production.

Teaser posters will often be mysterious or intriguing, intended to entice your curiosity and interest without revealing too much of the film's plot.

Notable styles for teaser poster include:
- bearing only a symbol associated with the film, or simply just the title.
- a main character, looking away from the screen but looking at something in the distance.

Section b)
CHARACTER POSTER FORMAT:

For a film with key cast there may be a set of character posters, each featuring an individual character from the film.

Usually it contains the name of the actor or the name of the character played. It may also include a tagline that reflects something about the character.
